Assignment 1: Angelica

Along 17th Street NW in Atlanta is an area called Atlantic Station. This is a view driving east along 17th Street. Located near the skyscraper filled Central Business District (CBD) Atlantic Station is a redevelopment project that included mixed-use for homes and businesses. Since this area is in the frame of the CBD, I would say it fits in the definition of the area of assimilation because it experienced redevelopment with bigger buildings that mimic the CBD lifestyle. As seen in this photograph, the buildings are not very diverse and exemplify Ford's "wall syndrome" and diminished diversity in urban design. The buildings are almost replicas of each other in different scales, with the modern glass wall design, throughout this photograph.

Another area with a CBD is Buckhead in North Atlanta. Heading north along Lenox Road, once begins to see the transition from residential to CBD with a frame of transition containing shops and businesses that both nearby residents and CBD employees would frequent. Although the skyline is not as condensed as the one near downtown Atlanta, the effects of skyscraper heights and designs are still evident. As seen in this photograph, the building in the back stands out and takes all the focus away from the smaller surrounding buildings. The growing development in the area also causes more influx of traffic and congestion with less pedestrian friendly space for nearby residents.

In the third picture, we are back to the 17th Street NW in Atlanta, looking south along that road. One can see the "less expensive" housing redevelopment along the frame of the CBD. Not necessarily the zone of discard or a skid row, but a middle income housing development with more economic housing options. Although it is located near areas of warehouses, it does not appear to be a skid row area according to Ford's definition.

  1. Develop the relationship between historic downtown, the Atlantic Station site, and Buckhead more fully. You start to do this, but could make many additional connections with Ford's model.
