Assignment 5: Lyle

The following are pictures I took of the Sears at Northlake Mall

The outside of the store shows how the car has transformed the retail environment. A large parking lot sits in front of a plain, windowless storefront. If not for the large Sears sign, there would be no way to tell what store this was or if it was a store at all. There are windows at the entrance, but the tint prevents anyone from seeing inside unless they walk right up to the door.

Looking at the store entrance from inside the mall, a place where pedestrians matter more than cars, we can look into the store and see what Sears has to offer shoppers. The merchandise is spread across the floor, giving people the idea that the store has a lot to offer. Small window space on both sides of the entrance gives a little space for Sears to feature a few items, giving some sense of the old idea of window shopping.

Inside Sears, you can see the classic setup of a department store. Signs on the columns indicate the different sections, or departments. The interior of this Sears is very simple with very little decoration, giving the sense that the store still caters to working people, as opposed to the more ornate department stores.
