Assignment 7: Mollie

Hyatt Place is one of four hotels in the Stonecrest Mall area in Lithonia, GA. The four hotels are surrounded by little to no landscaping or “greenspace” and are relatively the same shape and size “decorated boxes.” Hyatt Place is visible and easily accessed from a major interstate. Such an accessible location would encourage its utilitarian use by individuals attending a conference or conducting business in the area. The stark context of vast stretches of concrete parking and roadways in which it is set further supports use by non-tourists.

The exterior of Hyatt Place is sterile and well kept. The structure exhibits contrasting red and beige stucco with large windows to each of the rooms. Parking is available around the entire structure. It is located directly across from a small strip mall and a short walk or drive to any of the shops and restaurants in the Stonecrest Mall area.

Despite catering to a more business oriented clientele, the interior of Hyatt Place supports a more social atmosphere. The front door opens upon a prominent seating area exhibiting modern, leather furniture, dark, warm colors, and diffuse lighting. The front desk is initially hidden by a wall to the right of the front door. A bar and additional seating are beyond that. The area is relatively small and at the time was not being utilized by any clients despite its intended use.
