Assignment 8: Lyle

The name of this subdivision just off of I-20 in Eastern DeKalb County, Miller Park, evokes the idea of a public, green space. Instead, most of this unfinished neighborhood is blocked off from people going far onto the property. Signs in the front yards of the inhabited houses say “Private Residence,” making sure we know that land does not belong to the public and that we should stay away. The homes in this neighborhood are huge, adding to the idea of new home construction that bigger is better.

The houses also use many conventional models of subdivision construction, using stone and brick and following a common floor plan, though in this neighborhood, each house uses a different façade. Like other housing development in the last few years, the economy has prevented further development. A large section of the subdivision remains undisturbed with construction and many of the completed houses are still for sale.
The common areas around the neighborhood, including around the sign at the entrance into the development, are overgrown with tall grass and weeds, giving another idea that the economy has dealt a blow to the once grand plans for this site.
