Assignment 10: Mollie

The physical structure and my memory reveal the previous functions of the structure pictured above. The sign and shed indicate the former use of Uncle Gene’s as a gas station, located in Rockdale County. Open space around the perimeter and appendage to the right of the structure indicates the previous existence of a produce stand and restaurant.

A lack of development in the area and traffic flow, as well low income housing in the immediate vicinity most likely prompted the abandonment of this structure. Additionally, a lack of maintenance and the owner’s tendency to cater to a white population in an area that is now predominately African American and Hispanic could have contributed to its decline and ultimate abandonment.

Jakle’s characterization of the site and those that owned and operated it would entail underutilization, disinvestment, vacancy, and eventual abandonment. The obsolescence of the structure in an undeveloped area and its replacement constructed only miles down the road led to its ultimate demise. The cycle of gas station construction and abandonment is so quick and obvious that many are used for mere months before being replaced by similar structures across the street.

There are limited rehabilitation prospects for the structure do to its form and context as it is neither architecturally nor historically significant, and is located in an undeveloped area. It could be rehabilitated as a gas station. Unfortunately, it would be more cost effective if demolished and sold for its land value alone. New development would quickly fill the void left by its destruction, if only physically.

  1. Grim prospects, indeed, not least since the gas-station use probably has contaminated the site.
