The abandoned building I observed is located at the corner of Ralph McGill Boulevard NE and Ensley Street NE. Small and free-standing, the structure appeared to at one time have housed a take-out restaurant or convenient store. The main clue to its past use is the floor to ceiling glass entrance. It has been abandoned for at least a few years. It is surrounded by a neighborhood, with a large apartment complex on one side, and residential houses on the other. The building seems almost out of place, which might have something to do with the abandonment.
The structure has been tagged on all sides of the building by multiple graffiti artists. The wooden roof is deteriorating due to weather. The interior structural system has begun to fall down. Vegetation has begun to encompass the entrance and the ten car parking lot.
Rehabilitating the property depends more on the future use and less on the condition of the building. The structure can be preserved and maintained easily in my opinion. Though, I do not feel the space should be used as retail. Instead, the property would work better as a residential space, possibly a small office space, but a house design would be best for the entire area.
