Assignment 2: Heather Miller

The Five Points Marta Station represents what some call a "thirdspace." A thridspace may be located in a parking lot, yard, park, or sidewalk (as in the case of the Marta station.) This public space is used by the poor, homeless, and middle class for multiple uses. These spaces are unrestricted by buildings and thus constantly change form. The uses occurring in these spaces are cyclical and change depending on the time of day, time of year, or current weather. These spaces also serve as various functions to those who find themselves in them: social, aesthetic, economical, etc. This is true of the Marta station. The Marta station for many is simply a place to get a ride. The people riding Marta often rush by in a hurry to catch the train or bus. However some enjoy this waiting time as a time to social with each other. Many people who frequent this station know each other by name. It serves a social function in a very busy and often times unconnected city. (See the first picture)
The second photo shows what occurs during several different times of the week. The far left corner of the block becomes somewhat of a religious gathering place. Many people sell religious affiliated items, while some simply try to share their faith. The man in the photo gives out tracts a couple of times a week at this location.
When it starts to rain many vendors pack up in an attempt to keep their items and themselves from getting wet. Notice in the third photo that one vendor has already lifted an umbrella in anticipation of possible rain. Also note in the picture above the heavy foot traffic. What is a shopping experience for is simply a route home for others.
When night appears the vendors vanish. It is also at night when the station becomes a gathering place for many of the city's homeless. Some sleep on benches (until the cops make them move) while others see it simply as a social gathering place. I did not take any night shots as I feel many of the night time inhabitants of this space would not appreciate someone taking their photo.
