These pictures were taken at the intersection of Peachtree, West Peachtree, 19th Street, and the Northeast Expressway. There is an interesting dynamic here with the combination SCAD buildings, mirrored office buildings, sculptures, and the Margret Mitchell House. Specifically, the Mitchell House looks static against the bustle of the intersection, and likewise, the apartment building behind SCAD looks out of place. It reminds me of Barna article, which discussed creation and destruction. In it, he points out that architects sometimes design buildings in such a way that gives their projects value, while taking value from the surrounding buildings. When viewed this way, one can see the progression of design amongst the structures. The Margaret Mitchell House and church share similar structure and materials, but are both positioned next to much larger office buildings, which diminishes the spaces of both the older buildings. In fact, there are many elements which seem to be working to hide the older structures. From many angles, the trees obstruct the Margaret Mitchell House, and both from the Northeast Expressway and Spring Street, the graffiti on the playhouse is more visible.

What assignment is this? There is not headline and it's not clear otherwise. Please fix.
ReplyDeleteThis is not the Margaret Mitchell House. Margaret Mitchell is at 10th St.
ReplyDeleteThe assignment asks for 3 photos only. Additional ones are simply extraneous.
The assignment asks you to find 3 places around town that illustrate the evolution of the American downtown. It's not clear how you've answered that question.
