Assignment 10: Simone

In the spirit of this being my last sketchbook entry I played around and edited three of my pictures. I felt that with my edits it brings a sense of pastness to the pictures, making you feel like you are part of the past and the future for this neighborhood is very different. With the fully operating Norfolk Southern rail road, abandoned building and brand new apartments in the background, the neighborhood of People's Town is a good example of what Jakle calls decay. Here growth and decay are happening at the same time, although one may be happening faster than the other. I captured the picture of the old and rusted spray paint can, because Jakle says that Americans ignore decay and do not wanted to be confronted with age. The decay of this can is undeniable and also represents the area and train cars, with their many graffiti designs. Formerly this site was probably a factory, and abandoned as a result of the crashing economy. This neighborhood is one of Atlanta's poorer neighborhood's and therefore the crashing market probably effected them way before it effected healthier parts of the city. However, People's Town is a prime location because of its location to downtown and Turner Field, and city views. Reinvestment in this neighborhood can be seen in some parts, but there is still more decay than anything.
